Overview

This grant, called the Flexible Funding Model-Infrastructure Development and Maintenance for State Manufactured Food Regulatory Programs, does not accept Clinical Trials. The aim is to strengthen the national Integrated Food Safety System (IFSS) by assisting the Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards (MFRPS), Food Protection Task Force (FPTF), Dietary Supplement (DS) programs, and special projects.

The term "state" in this context means all eligible organizations as per Section 3. This offer aims to help state manufactured food regulatory programs meet and keep up with the latest Manufactured Food Regulatory Program Standards, which encourage high-quality regulatory schemes through development and maintenance. The standards are designed to increase food safety by providing a uniform criterion for assessing and enhancing the performance of these programs in the US. By adhering to these standards, federal and state programs can better direct their measures towards foodborne illness hazards in food manufacturing, processing, packing, and holding plants.

This grant also supports the establishment of a Food Protection Task Force with diverse stakeholder representation. The FPTF is charged with promoting an efficient, state-wide human and animal food protection system that meets specific regional needs and maximizes public health protection. Activities may include setting up a network of food safety experts, promoting educational opportunities, developing replicable resources, and encouraging cooperative efforts among various agencies, industries, academia, and consumers. A robust FPTF can also improve food emergency surveillance, response, and post-response systems through preparedness and establishing strong communication channels and relationships before food-related incidents occur.

Regarding dietary supplements, the funding will aid state-driven regulatory framework and development. It aims to advance the adoption and implementation of the cGMPs rules for Dietary Supplements codified at 21 CFR Part 111, specifically by providing financial support for dietary supplement training and development activities.

Finally, the funding will support special projects that catalyze innovation and integration within the IFSS using the MFRPS framework. The focus will be emerging food safety priorities that arise during the project. The state programs are required to share any project outcomes and developed resources with other programs.
