Overview

This funding opportunity aims to support research into social behavior and its link with Substance Use Disorders (SUD). The grant—referred to as Mechanistic Studies on Social Behavior in Substance Use Disorder (R01 Basic Experimental Studies with Humans (BESH) Required)—is designed to stimulate innovative research using an interdisciplinary approach that blends social/cognitive neuroscience with other social sciences.

The objective of this project is to develop and test a conceptual or computational model offering insights into how social behavior influences the initial onset, progression and effects of SUD and related health problems. As specified in NOT-OD-18-212, the grant is particularly interested in supporting BESH research—prospective, basic science studies involving human participants.

It is important to note that this type of studies constitutes both a clinical trial according to the NIH definition and is also classified as basic research. The overall aim is to deepen our understanding of SUD and improve future treatment approaches through this advanced study of social behavior.
