Overview

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) has announced its FY25 Young Investigator Program (YIP). The program is designed to recognise and provide financial support to emerging academic scientists and engineers showing exceptional promise in creative research fields. It is specifically tailored to those who are in their first or second full-time tenure-track or equivalent positions, having obtained their PhD or an equivalent degree on or after January 1, 2017.

The ONR YIP aims to not only support pioneering research but also to attract top US faculty members to the Department of the Navy's Science and Technology (S&T) research program. This endeavor is intended to uplift their teaching and research careers.

Individuals holding positions at U.S. non-profit organizations equivalent to academic appointments are also welcome to apply. Importantly, research proposals should align with the areas of interest as described in the S&T Department section of the ONR's website(https://www.nre.navy.mil/).

Prospective candidates are expressly advised to discuss their research ideas with the relevant Program Officer for a specific technical area before submitting a proposal. Such early engagements could shape and strengthen the proposal to match ONR's specific interests. Contact information for Officers associated with each S&T division is provided on the ONR's website. A comprehensive list of most Program Officers and their respective contact details can be found at: https://www.nre.navy.mil/our-research/onr-technology-and-research or https://www.nre.navy.mil/our-research/our-program-officers.
