Overview

The Aquatic Invasive Species Interjurisdictional Grants (F24AS00227) for the Great Lakes States and Tribes are part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) for Fiscal Year 2024. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is responsible for distributing these grants, which are designed to support projects involving multiple jurisdictions with a common goal to manage Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) in the Great Lakes area.

These grants are awarded competitively to states and tribes located in the Great Lakes region, or their designated representatives. Projects eligible for funding are those located in or sufficiently close to the Great Lakes Basin such that they contribute significantly to the control and prevention of AIS in this area.

Particularly, activities such as community outreach, boat ramp inspections, and law enforcement if conducted outside the basin are considered eligible, provided these efforts target areas potentially serving as transit points for the transfer of AIS into the basin. Examples of relevant efforts include early detection of invasive species, immediate response actions, and control initiatives outside the basin.

Priority will be given to activities targeting species with high potential for entering the basin, such as hydrilla in heavy boat use areas near the basin, species posing significant threats to the lake community within a Great Lakes state, and actions aimed primarily at preventing AIS transfer into the basin. In essence, funding priority goes to actions providing the greatest benefits to the Great Lakes Basin.

It is important to note that projects related to invasive carp are only eligible for consideration if they have been submitted and vetted through the annual development and approval process of the Invasive Carp Regional Coordinating Committee's (ICRCC) Action Plan. The ICRCC, funded by a separate source of GLRI funding, develops an annual work plan that undergoes a separate review process including the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
