Overview

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ), part of the Office of Justice Programs (OJP) within the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), is seeking applications for its FY24 Research and Development in Forensic Science for Criminal Justice Purposes grant. The DOJ and OJP's mission is to advance civil rights and equity, increase access to justice, support those impacted by crime and the justice system, strengthen community safety and protect the public from criminal and new emerging threats, and foster trust between law enforcement and communities.

This specific grant is designed to fund both basic and applied research and development within the field of forensic science. The main aim is to address current research priorities and technological challenges within forensic science laboratories, as identified by NIJ’s Forensic Science Strategic Research Plan and Forensic Science Research and Development Technology Working Group (TWG). The intention is to develop new knowledge and innovative tools which can help the criminal justice community to enforce the law, enhance public safety, prevent and lessen crime, and guarantee fair and impartial administration of justice.

This grant program aligns with the DOJ's overarching mission to uphold the rule of law, maintain national safety, and safeguard civil rights.
