Overview

The Grant for Mechanistic Investigations into Multiple Etiology Dementias (R01 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) is designed to support studies exploring various forms of dementia. The grant encourages research into different co-pathologies related to dementia, including tau, alpha-synuclein, TDP-43, TMEM106B, vascular, and others. Studies can optionally consider additional risk factors and co-morbidities.

The aim is to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms through which these co-pathologies interact, and influence the progression and characteristics of neurodegenerative conditions. Specifically, the research should focus on how these interactions exacerbate neurodegenerative processes and lead to more severe phenotypic outcomes.

The proposed study should analyze these cellular and molecular interactions in different areas of the brain, across varying time frames and within specific cell groups. Researchers should also consider the impact of these co-pathologies on different intracellular processes and their location within the cell.

Further, it's essential to study these processes both before and after the creation of protein aggregates, to identify causal factors leading to worsening of phenotypic outcomes.
