Overview
The grant focuses specifically on supporting the BETO Renewable Carbon Resources Program's goal of reducing the cost and increasing the quantity of renewable carbon resources. It aims to do this through funding research that improves the cultivation of purpose-grown energy crops across various geographic landscapes. The research would look at improving aspects such as the quality, yield, cost-effectiveness, carbon intensity reduction, pest management, ecosystem services and more.
There is one main Topic Area within this grant, which is Purpose-Grown Energy Crops. This is further divided into four subtopics - Algae, Herbaceous Energy Crops, Intermediate Energy Crops, and Short Rotation Woody Crops. Applicants must choose one subtopic to focus their research on.
Successful applications will be part of the larger Regional Biomass Resource Hub Initiative (RBRH), working with Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to coordinate research plans and data sharing. However, please note that due to its role as Initiative Coordinator, INL cannot apply for funding or be part of another application for this grant.
