Overview

The National Institutes of Health's Office of the Director has issued a Notice of Funding opportunity, inviting entities from Institutional Development Award (IDeA)-eligible States to apply for a grant to participate in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) IDeA States Pediatric Clinical Trials Network - 3. This opportunity is geared toward powering the intervention aspect of the ECHO program, enhancing child health for future generations.

The point of interest for applicants will be the role of 'Clinical Sites' within the ECHO ISPCTN. Each Clinical Site will need to be prepared to partake in roughly five multicenter pediatric clinical trials revolving around the prevention or treatment in at least two of ECHO's five outcome areas. These include pre-, peri-, postnatal outcomes; upper and lower airway health; obesity; neurodevelopment and positive health.

As per the grant, Clinical Sites will be responsible for developing, conducting and communicating the findings from these multicenter clinical trials. An emphasis on ensuring the involvement of children from rural or underserved communities in IDeA states is a crucial part of the mandate. The goal is to construct a robust pediatric clinical trial research capacity in these states, funded by the ECHO ISPCTN.

Moreover, the program also entertains an interactive approach. Clinical Sites are expected to engage with community members, nonprofit organizations, professional societies and any other similarly interested parties. This is intended to improve the impact, transferability, rigor and feasibility of the ECHO ISPCTN clinical trials.

The ultimate aim is to produce valid and universally relevent results to relevant health research queries through meticulous use of scientific methodology. This involves recruiting and retaining a significant number of participants that justifies the need for multicenter trials. Simultaneously, a parallel Notice of Funding Opportunity is also inviting applications for a Data Coordinating and Operations Center within the IDeA States, which will work in coalition with Clinical Sites to form the ECHO ISPCTN.
