Overview

The International Research Scientist Development Award (IRSDA) is a grant that aims to offer financial assistance and dedicated time (between three to five years) to U.S. research scientists who have recently completed their postdoctoral studies and newly-appointed junior faculty members. This support is intended to help recipients deepen their research skills through a mentor-guided career development experience in a low- or middle-income country, also known as an LMIC.

The World Bank defines these LMICs as "low-income," "lower-middle-income," and "upper-middle-income" countries for the context of the grant. By facilitating this research in these nations, the IRSDA seeks to encourage an independently-funded research career with a significant focus on global health issues.

The grant comes with a specific requirement; to be eligible, applicants must have earned their doctoral degree at least two years prior to their application. Furthermore, they need to propose a research project that aligns with the health priorities of the selected LMIC. This research and career development endeavours should be conducted under the supervision of mentors from both the target LMIC and the U.S. The grant is open to junior faculty and postdoctoral research scientists across all health-related disciplines.
