Overview

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is inviting applications for a new Cooperative Agreement that will focus on the research of steel slag's properties and potential uses in concrete, cement, and as a construction material for transport infrastructure.

The goal of this grant is to explore the effectiveness of steel slag in these contexts and build upon previous research conducted under the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This is in an effort to strengthen the resilience of the national transport infrastructure and contribute towards national decarbonization goals for the transportation sector by 2050.

This funding opportunity requires that an accredited research university collaborates with a U.S. steel producer to undertake the stated research. By fostering such partnerships, the initiative aims to enhance our understanding of using steel slag and promote the advancement of research and emerging technologies related to the nation’s strategic ambitions.

The research outcomes will align with the U.S. Government and DOT's strategic priorities, as outlined in the relevant documented plans. The cooperative agreement is expected to lead to significant advancements in construction methodology that incorporate steel slag, ultimately driving the country's sustainability agenda.
