Overview

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) is offering the Marine Energy University Foundational Research and Development Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). This grant is facilitated by the Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) and the Wind Energy Technologies Office (WETO), with the intent of supporting fundamental research in America's higher education institutions, including Minority Serving Institutions (MSI).

The objective of this FOA is to tackle the issues facing marine energy industries, trigger innovation, and promote progressive development. The grant recognizes that universities provide an excellent platform for high-level research, offering intellectual capital, state-of-the-art infrastructure, commitment to knowledge sharing, and training for future scientists and scholars.

The FOA will fund foundational research and development activities enhancing marine energy and offshore wind technologies, hence expanding the use of renewable ocean energy sources. Funding will be provided for the following key areas:

1. Development and analysis of publicly accessible marine energy data, and creation of test platforms for making this data publicly available.

2. Endorsement of sustainable and scalable offshore wind, marine energy, and aquaculture.

3. Support for undergraduate senior design and/or research projects tied to marine energy.

4. An Open Topic Area where applicants can propose research on relevant but unspecified subjects.

For complete details on the FOA, prospective applicants can visit the EERE Exchange Website at https://eere-exchange.energy.gov.
