Overview

The U.S. Embassy Tbilisi's Public Diplomacy Section (PDS) is introducing a Book Translation Program for the year 2024. The purpose of this grant program is to provide funding for the translation of significant American works into Georgian, thereby making contemporary American literature and important research more accessible and affordable to Georgian learners, researchers, and the public generally.

The program will support projects for a maximum period of two years and it is anticipated that up to 15 awards will be granted. The exact number of awards will depend on the amounts requested in approved proposals. The majority of a project's budget, up to 70%, can be covered by the grant from the U.S. Embassy Tbilisi. The total funding that’s available for the initiative is $100,000, with a funding request ceiling of $10,000 per project.

Program participation requires a minimum of 30% cost-sharing, which can be provided from either the applicant organization or other sources. If co-funding is acquired from another organization, a letter of approval from that organization will be needed.

Projects requesting both printed and e-books are allowed. Printed book projects should have a minimum print-run of 1,000, with exceptions made for textbooks produced by education institutions. For e-book projects, the terms must be confirmed with the copyright holder. Applications should initiate negotiation with copyright holders as early as possible.

Applications may be for work that has not previously been published in Georgian and must be translations of original language works. Each applicant may submit up to five proposals per call. The same proposals cannot be re-submitted on the second call of the same year.

Applicants should be proactive in post-publication promotional activities. Cooperating with American Spaces for regional activities is encouraged.

To apply, follow all instructions correctly. Proposals that do not stick to these instructions will not be eligible. Ensure your proposal is in English, all budgets are shown in U.S. dollars, and pages are numbered. Make sure Microsoft Word documents are single-spaced, use a 12 point Times New Roman font, with minimum 1-inch margins and all documents are properly formatted.

You’re required to submit several forms, including some mandatory application forms, a CV of the translator, a copy of your communication with the copyright holder, and, if applicable, co-funding letter and partnership letter. All these documents must be submitted on either the 15th of March or the 15th of May 2024 by 18:00.
