Overview
A part of RERCs' role includes demonstrating the new technologies, evaluating their effectiveness, instigating changes in service delivery systems, encouraging the production and private sector distribution of these technologies as well as providing training opportunities.
This program, in particular, focuses its research and development activities on creating rehabilitation practices and services that improve the overall health of people with various disabilities. It also aims to enhance the physical, cognitive, sensory, or communication abilities of these individuals, focusing primarily on those with the greatest need for support.
The engineering efforts made in this area should result in the creation of new or enhanced products and devices. In addition, there should be technological advancements that significantly improve rehabilitation services in either clinical or community settings.
The National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) intends to provide funding for this initiative through a single grant. The grant will support a 60-month long project which will be divided into five 12-month budget periods.
