Overview

The Stephen I. Katz Early Stage Investigator Research Project Grant (R01) is a funding opportunity designed for initiating innovative projects in a new research direction by Early Stage Investigators (ESI), for which no preliminary data is available. This grant is specially for basic research in experimental studies involving human participants, which is in line with NOT-OD-18-212. Such projects fall within the definition of clinical trial and basic research as stated by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The grant applications must not include any preliminary data. Instead, they must carry an attachment describing the deviation in the research direction. The Proposed project aim should align with the scientific mission of one or more participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs).

The studies that should apply for this grant are the ones intending to assign human participants experimentally to various conditions in order to assess biomedical or behavioral outcomes. The main objective here should be to understand the basic aspects of phenomena, without having any specific applications towards processes or products.

Projects that are not designed with a specific application towards product or process and don't fit into the clinical trial definition should apply under the separate Clinical Trial Not Allowed funding opportunity announcement.
