Overview

The Early Stage Investigator HIV/AIDS Research Using Nonhuman Primate (NHP) Models Grant is designed to support preclinical HIV/AIDS research. It is specifically intended for Early Stage Investigators (ESIs) who are within 10 years of completing their terminal degree or residency training and have at least two years of postdoctoral experience. The focus of the research must be on using NHP models in preclinical research.

The grant aims to advance HIV/AIDS research by providing these early-stage researchers a certain level of independence to explore new research directions. An additional goal is to position these researchers in a competitive position for future funding opportunities, such as the R01 research project grant.

The proposed projects applying for this grant must center around using NHPs as preclinical models for HIV/AIDS research. The research activities should align with the priorities detailed in the 2021-2025 NIH Strategic Plan for HIV and HIV-Related Research.

The strategy entails five primary focus areas: reducing the incidence of HIV, developing next-generation HIV therapies, conducting research towards finding a cure for HIV, addressing complications and comorbidities associated with HIV, including coinfections, and advancing in cross-cutting areas of research. The entire strategy can be found on the NIH website at https://www.oar.nih.gov/hiv-policy-and-research/strategic-plan.
