Overview
The grant aims to advance HIV/AIDS research by providing these early-stage researchers a certain level of independence to explore new research directions. An additional goal is to position these researchers in a competitive position for future funding opportunities, such as the R01 research project grant.
The proposed projects applying for this grant must center around using NHPs as preclinical models for HIV/AIDS research. The research activities should align with the priorities detailed in the 2021-2025 NIH Strategic Plan for HIV and HIV-Related Research.
The strategy entails five primary focus areas: reducing the incidence of HIV, developing next-generation HIV therapies, conducting research towards finding a cure for HIV, addressing complications and comorbidities associated with HIV, including coinfections, and advancing in cross-cutting areas of research. The entire strategy can be found on the NIH website at https://www.oar.nih.gov/hiv-policy-and-research/strategic-plan.
