Overview

The NIH Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is dedicated to fostering the career growth of research scientists in the field of HIV/AIDS translational studies involving the use of nonhuman primates (NHPs) as preclinical models. This grant known as the HIV/AIDS Scholars Using Nonhuman Primate Models Program, provides compensation and funding for research for scientists within the first decade after obtaining their highest completed degree or finishing their residency.

The award grants three years of intensive research career development, under the supervision and guidance of seasoned mentors, which have expertise in utilizing NHP HIV/AIDS models in pre-clinical studies and in applying these findings to human clinical applications. The goal is to enable award recipients to establish independent research careers and increase their competitiveness for new research project grant funding (e.g., R01).

The program aligns with the NIH's strategic plan for HIV and HIV-Related Research for fiscal years 2021-2025. This includes reducing HIV incidences, developing next-gen HIV therapies, conducting research toward an HIV cure, and addressing HIV-associated comorbidities, coinfections, and complications.

However, this grant is explicitly designed for candidates who are not proposing to lead independent clinical trials, clinical trial feasibility studies, or ancillary studies to a clinical trial. Applicants can propose research experience in a clinical trial if it is led by a mentor or co-mentor. Should applicants wish to lead a clinical trial or an ancillary clinical trial, they are directed to apply for the companion FOA.
