Overview

The Cardiovascular Repository Type 1 Diabetes (CARE-T1D) Consortium (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) is primarily directed towards understanding and curbing cardiovascular complications in individuals with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D). These complications pose a significant threat to their lives, proving to be their leading cause of death. Interestingly, the cardiovascular disease (CVD) progression in people with T1D differs from those with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) and continues to pose a risk even after the treatment of common risk factors such as hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia.

To further the research in this area, the NIH started the CARE-T1D initiative. The primary objective of this initiative is to set up a biorepository of human cardiovascular tissue along with a scientific consortium that encourages discovery and research. These efforts aim to enhance the understanding of CVD in people with T1D.

The initiative was rolled out in two phases - the first introduced the biorepository, and now, under the second phase, investigatory squads are being integrated to create a consortium. This consortium, coordinated by the biorepository, is responsible for the collection of hearts, kidneys, peripheral arteries, carotid, alongside the blood from organ donors suffering from T1D, T2D, and those without diabetes.

The underlying objective of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to bring together investigatory teams having complementary interests and expertise. Their task will be to effectively utilize these resources through individual and collaborative studies to further the understanding of the leading cause of CVD in T1D.
