Overview

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is inviting applications for a National Center for Construction Safety and Health Research and Translation (U54) grant. This call is intended for qualified organizations that can take a multi-faceted approach towards construction safety and health research and translation.

The applicant organization is expected to propose solutions for identifying and controlling hazards, conduct applied and intervention research that reaps impact, and forming partnerships to implement proactive safety measures. The aim is to enhance the safety of construction workers in the United States by closing the gap between research and practice. One way to achieve this is by acting as a leader in research translation.

The Center is supposed to align its work with the NIOSH Strategic Plan and the National Occupational Research Agenda's (NORA) construction research objectives. This alignment should help to integrate and accelerate the advancement of research, best practices, policy/guidance, and capacity building.

It is also expected that the Center will leverage diverse scientific resources to focus on national worker safety and health issues in an innovative manner. It should place a heavy emphasis on creating and executing evidence-based solutions to major safety and health issues within the construction industry.

Collaborations with other occupational safety and health-focused groups, academic institutions, and nonprofit organizations are also anticipated. This diverse collaboration will allow the Center to approach safety and health issues from a wider perspective.

An essential part of the application is a concise description of the occupational health burden related to vital safety and health issues in the construction industry. Applicants need to discuss how targeted research and outreach activities will help ease this burden and reduce the related numbers.

Furthermore, applicants must clearly state the anticipated impacts of the proposed work of the Center, both during the project period and beyond. This articulation should indicate how they plan to make a lasting change in the construction industry's safety and health environment.
