Overview
To achieve this, LEAD MSTP provides financial support to eligible institutions within the United States. The funding allows these institutions to develop effective strategies informed by scientific studies and mentorship programs to transition students smoothly between clinical and research doctorate degrees. Pursuing such a dual qualification would enable students to gain a comprehensive skill set, equipping them to create research projects which expedite the application of research findings to the detection, treatment, prevention and understanding of human diseases.
The LEAD MSTP outlines several primary interests for NIGMS, including fostering the development of efficient training programs, promoting the continuation of alumni in research careers, and boosting diversity within the clinician-scientist workforce. The program expects the proposed training initiatives to incorporate various elements such as research, mentoring, career development, and didactic teaching to prepare trainees for impactful careers in health-related research.
The LEAD MSTP is limited to dual-degree programs at three specific types of institutions: Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and institutions located in states and territories participating in the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program. The IDeA program is a congressionally mandated initiative aimed at enhancing research capacity in states.
