Overview

The Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDS&E) meta-program aims to identify and capitalize on opportunities for significant scientific and engineering advancements. The program utilizes advanced computational methods and big data analytics to encourage breakthroughs across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines. The program is not designed to replace existing programs, but rather to supplement them with extensive computational or data science components.

CDS&E encourages research that pushes the boundaries of science and engineering with advanced computations and data analytics. Proposals across any research domain supported by participating divisions are welcomed. In addition, proposals can tackle issues that stimulate interactions among theory, computing, experimentation, and observation.

Emphasis areas for the CDS&E program may vary per program. Therefore, Primary Investigators (PIs) are encouraged to consult the related programs before submitting a proposal. Any proposal submitted to the CDS&E program that is not in accordance with the program description may be transferred to or reviewed within the individual program context.

Given the interest in accelerating advancements in multiple disciplines, the CDS&E program is eager for substantive science, engineering, or computing research proposals. The proposals can include the development of algorithm and pilot software that supports science and engineering, depending on the particular program. Prospective proposers who aim to implement proven techniques into robust cyberinfrastructure are instead directed to the Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI) program.

When submitting a proposal to the CDS&E program, it must be submitted to one of the related programs or divisions by the associated submission window or deadline. If a proposal falls outside of the receiving program's scientific scope, it may either be transferred to a different program or returned without review.

The following are the due dates for proposal submission:
