Overview

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is offering a Program Project Grant (P01) for research projects focusing on heart diseases, blood and lymphatic vessels, lungs, and blood. The research scope should include transfusion medicine, blood resources, sleep disorders, as well as implementation science, health disparities, and translational research that contributes to the mission of the NHLBI.

In order to encourage comprehensive and interconnected research, the grant stipulates a minimum of three interrelated research projects which investigate a complex biomedical theme or research question. Fulfilling this requirement would mean that all projects within the Program must be interlinked and must have goals that align with a central theme within NHLBI's scientific mandate.

The NHLBI believes that collaborative research can enhance scientific discovery more effectively than several independent, unrelated projects. Therefore, supporting facilities, like core units, are considered in this program to endorse efficiency in terms of effort, space, and equipment.

A unique characteristic of this grant is that it aims to draw scientists who have not traditionally been supported by the NHLBI. The P01 grant also represents a chance for budding scientific leaders to gain insight into leading successful scientific programs. For this, a project led by an Early Stage Investigator (ESI) can be part of the application.

Through this grant, the NHLBI aims to specifically encourage new scientific directions in Program Project Grants (PPGs). For researchers interested in the specified areas and working collaboratively, this opportunity might be a great fit.
