Overview

The Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) is a program with the goal of creating a diverse group of scientists, all with Ph.D. qualifications, who have the potential to transition into the biomedical research workforce. The program aims to increase the diversity of biomedical research scientists in the national workforce in the long term.

To achieve these objectives, the IMSD program provides funding to eligible U.S. institutions to introduce effective techniques for biomedical training and mentoring that keep up with fast-paced research evolution. The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) anticipates that the funded research training programs will integrate academic, research, and career development aspects to prepare trainees for impactful careers addressing the nation's health-related research needs.

The IMSD grant is exclusively available for research-intensive institutions that have a three-year average of NIH Research Project Grant funding of $7.5 million or more.
