Overview

The Prevention and Intervention Approaches for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Optional) grant offered is focused on creating and promoting strategies to prevent and intervene in cases of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). This grant is designed to fund research that will help reduce prenatal alcohol exposure, lower the incidence of FASD, and develop interventions for those already affected by FASD.

The grant works on an Exploratory/Developmental Phased Award (R61/R33) mechanism. Initially, the R61 phase supports the preliminary stages of the research including small-scale studies or analysis of existing data to develop hypotheses and test their feasibility. After achieving specific milestones in the R61 phase, the research can progress to the R33 phase, where the hypotheses are extensively tested. The transition from the R61 to the R33 phase is decided by the NIAAA program staff based on the fulfillment of certain set milestones.

The grant administrators hold research programs involving clinical trials in high regard and priority. Research programs that are looking to plan clinical trials or augment their current projects can also consider this grant under the TEMP-23832 or the R34 option.
