Overview
The geoscience sector, with a worse diversity record than most STEM fields, requires innovative strategies and tested practices. These measures can help attract and retain individuals underrepresented in geoscience education, research, and careers. The National Science Foundation's Directorate for Geosciences (NSF GEO) is calling for proposals to develop unique or existing efforts to increase and support diverse participation in geoscience education and research.
One suggested focus for proposals is Professional Development. Here, the creation of BAJEDI (Belonging Accessibility Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion) leaders via professional development programs is encouraged. Projects aimed at identifying and overcoming academic barriers that prevent diversity growth, and strategies for creating sustainable diversity leadership teams within the geoscience community are also advised. Focus areas for Professional Development proposals should include BAJEDI training for upcoming job market entrants, development of inclusive educational programs, creation of guidelines to assist in BAJEDI plan implementation, and the fostering of practices that value BAJEDI leaders.
Another recommendation focuses on growing Geoscience Capacity at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). Recognizing the crucial role that MSIs play in supporting diverse students, NSF GEO encourages proposals for new or existing geoscience programs at MSIs. These can be aimed at creating or growing educational programs, establishing partnerships, and developing novice bridge programs to boost geoscience enrolment at MSIs and prepare students for professional geoscience roles. Barriers that could interfere with these programs – including grants or institutional policies – should be identified and mitigated. The establishment of a coordination unit to aid in the construction of grant management at MSIs would also be beneficial.
Proposal developers should incorporate the expertise of social and behavioral science experts in the geosciences to address BAJEDI-related issues, and further disseminate information on lessons learnt from existing activities. New collaboration opportunities across NSF Broadening Participation Programs are also encouraged. It is vital for proposals to clearly demonstrate their relevance to NSF's GOLD Program to be considered for funding, failing which they may be declined.
