Overview

This is an announcement for a limited competition grant program, specifically meant for current or recent awardees of NHLBI K01, K08, K23, and K25. The goal of this funding opportunity is to offer small grant assistance to these awardees to help further their existing research goals or venture into a new study that arose from their research under the K award.

Those active holders of NHLBI K01, K08, K23, and K25 are eligible to apply for R03 support after they're offered their first type-5 K awards. Additionally, those who have recently completed their NHLBI K01, K08, K23, and K25 can apply for the R03 if the earliest possible R03 start date is within two years of the end date of their previous NHLBI K award Project Period.

The aim of this funding opportunity is to bolster the research capabilities of NHLBI K01, K08, K23, and K25 awardees as they transition towards becoming fully independent investigators. The R03 grant mechanism is designed to support research projects that are both feasible to complete within a short period of time (maximum of two years) using limited resources, and are able to provide preliminary data to help secure subsequent R01-equivalent applications.

Research projects funded under this opportunity can include a myriad of studies including pilot or feasibility studies, proof of concept studies, secondary analysis of existing data, small niche research projects, development of new research methods or technologies, or creation of novel experimental models. For current and former K23 awardees, the research included in the R03 application is optional and can include patient-oriented research.

Applicants must commit to devoting a minimum of 40% of their overall research effort during the R03 award period. This commitment can be achieved through a combination of effort on the proposed R03 and other research projects, irrespective of the source of funding.
