Overview

The Advancing Research Careers (ARC) Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Transition Award to Promote Diversity (F99/K00 - Clinical Trial Not Allowed) program is designed to help promising graduate students from diverse backgrounds transition into and thrive in mentored postdoctoral research positions. The ultimate goal of this program is to prepare these ARC scholars for successful careers in the biomedical research workforce in specialties that usually require postdoctoral training, like academic research, teaching, industry, or government research.

The award consists of two phases, designed to support the student's progression through their academic career. The first phase (F99) is tailored towards graduate students in the later stages of their doctorate. It provides resources and assistance to help them finalize their doctoral dissertation projects and complete their research training. The focus of this phase is on research relevant to the mission areas of participating NIH Institutes, Centers, and Offices (ICOs).

The award's second phase (K00) specifically aims at easing the transition into postdoctoral biomedical research and career development opportunities. During this phase, ARC F99 fellows become K00 scholars, joining organized groups where they can benefit from mentorship, networking, and professional development activities. These cohorts' activities are coordinated by the recipients of the ARC Institutionally-Focused Research Education Award to Promote Diversity (UE5).

Therefore, the ARC F99/K00 award is an enriching, well-rounded program for graduate students looking to advance in the biomedical field while benefiting from a supportive and diverse network. All in all, it is not just about financial support but a comprehensive program aiming to holistically equip the scholars for a successful career.
