Overview

This grant, assigned the activity code R01, is intended for clinical research involving human participants and focuses on neuromodulation for treating substance use disorders (SUDs). Its primary aim is to facilitate research that will identify new possible targets for non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) and understand the changes in neurobiology, cognition and behavior relating to SUD that follow NIBS. These changes are expected to have clinical benefits such as lower cravings or reduced drug use.

In addition, this grant supports mechanistic studies, aiming to deepen our understanding of a particular biological process, behavior, disease pathophysiology or an intervention's mechanism of action. Every applicant should be aware that the grant falls under the National Institutes for Health (NIH) definition of a clinical trial, meaning the submitted proposals must include a plan to allocate human participants to one or more interventions to measure the effects on health-related biomedical or behavioral outcomes.

Applications must also include a Plan for Enhancing Diverse Perspectives (PEDP) to be considered complete; this section will be reviewed during the scientific and technical peer evaluation process. If it's not included, the application will be deemed incomplete and subsequently withdrawn. Lastly, applicants are strongly advised to thoroughly read the instructions and consult the available guidance material regarding the PEDP.
