Overview

The National Science Foundation's Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) is offering the CISE Research Initiation Initiative. This grant program is designed to nurture research independence among early-career academics who lack sufficient organizational or other resources. It is also aimed at extending the range of institutions capable of executing computing research.

The grant will predominantly support untenured faculty or research scientists within their first three years in a primary academic position post-PhD, but not exceeding six years after completing their PhD. Eligible applicants must not have been a principal investigator (PI) on a federal grant or contract, irrespective of the amount and source, including from programs such as CAREER, subsequent to obtaining their PhD. There are a few exceptions to this rule. However, serving as co-PI, senior personnel, postdoctoral fellow or other fellow does not compromise eligibility.

The objective of the CRII program is to equip early-career PIs with necessary resources to kick-start their research careers. Also, it aims to widen the pool of investigators in CISE research by prioritizing investigators who are either affiliated with non-R1 institutions that do not have a "very high research activity" status as per the Carnegie Classification, or non-profit, non-academic institutions.

Faculty at undergraduate and two-year institutions can use these funds to support undergraduate students and may also opt to use the additional RUI designation. This requires the inclusion of a RUI Certification and RUI Impact Statement.

The grant can be utilized for PI salary, postdoctoral scholars, travel, and/or research equipment. For further details, please visit the provided webpage links.
