Overview

The Diversity Centers for Genome Research (DCGR) program, a project with optional clinical trials under grant number U54, is designed with the intention of establishing Genomic Research Centers within Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). MSIs cater to historically underrepresented populations in the biomedical research field, awarding doctorate degrees in health professions or sciences relevant to health. These institutions should have received less than $50 million per year in support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and less than $25 million per year for NIH's R01 project costs over the last three fiscal years.

The DCGR program's main focus is supporting multi-investigator, interdisciplinary teams who aim to initiate 2-3 innovative, interconnected genomic research projects. These projects should address key issues in genomics, such as genomic technology/methods development, genome structure/function, disease genomics, genomic information's use and impact in clinical care, and ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic research. Additional focus areas include data science and computational genomics, with emphasis on issues of genomics and health equity.

Aside from its scientific objectives, the DCGR program also seeks to enhance the diversity of genomic scientists, clinician scientists, and researchers. The program achieves this by providing aligned research projects that offer didactic, practical, and research activities and experiences. Therefore, this initiative not only supports innovative genomic research but also intends to expand the pool of diverse professionals in the field.
