Overview

The Advanced Manufacturing (AM) program is committed to supporting the vital research initiatives required to rejuvenate American manufacturing and stimulate national prosperity, workforce growth and strategic industry evolution. The program concentrates on fast-tracking advancements in manufacturing technologies, specifically championing multidisciplinary research likely to revolutionize and transform manufacturing processes and procedures.

The AM program invites research proposals that focus on critical issues related to national prosperity and security. These proposals should also aim for knowledge expansions sufficient to maintain global leadership. Research areas of interest can encompass an extensive range that includes manufacturing systems, materials processing, manufacturing machines, methodologies, and exploring varying manufacturing scales.

Particularly, researchers engaged in fields such as cyber manufacturing systems, manufacturing machines and equipment, materials engineering and processing, and nanomanufacturing are urged to break down and transcend domain boundaries. The program invites proposals that blend together varied fields, taking manufacturing into new application areas, tackling challenges from various sectors other than manufacturing, and therefore widening the reach of America’s advanced manufacturing research.

Proposals of all magnitudes are welcome. Their consideration will depend solely on the justification presented in the project description. Before submission, it is advisable for investigators to discuss their ideas with the AM program directors at AdvancedManufacturing@nsf.gov.
