Overview

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have joined forces to create the NSF/FDA Scholar-in-Residence Program at FDA. This collaboration aims to explore scientific and engineering issues around emerging technologies in the medical device sector. It provides a platform for scholars in science, engineering, and computer science to establish research partnerships within the FDA's internal research environment.

The NSF's contributions to this program come through its Directorate for Engineering, the Directorate of Computer and Information Science, and Engineering Division of Computer and Network Systems, as well as the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences Division of Materials Research. The FDA's involvement stems from its Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH).

This program offers three flexible support mechanisms for carrying out research at the FDA:

1) As a Principal Investigator

2) As a Postdoctoral Researcher

3) As a Graduate Student.

The purpose behind these positions is to foster and advance investment in scientific and engineering exploration related to evolving trends in medical device technology.
