Overview

The Engineering Design and Systems Engineering (EDSE) program is devoted to backing innovative research that propels design and/or systems science. The goal of the program is to foster new knowledge about the design and creation of various types of engineered artifacts. These include devices, products, platforms, organizations, materials, systems, etc.

Focused on an all-inclusive view of design, the EDSE seeks to explore the relationship between designers, their creations, the methodologies they use, and the environment in which all of this occurs. The program promotes rigorous scientific evaluation of these elements and their outcomes.

The program values and actively encourages multidisciplinary proposals. It lends support to collaborations between design science or systems science with experts from a variety of fields such as social, behavioral, computational, and physical and biological sciences.

Competitive proposals will be the ones that demonstrate their grounding in theory, present clear potential for improving designs, and include a solid plan to test the proposed research methods across involved areas.

The EDSE program looks for fundamental contributions in particular areas. These encompass design aspects like representation, optimization, validation, and cognition. They also involve approach towards mechanism design, robotics, intelligent system design, design for under-resourced communities, and more.

Before proposal preparation and submission, prospective investigators are advised to discuss their research ideas with the Program Director. This way, the EDSE program aims to make significant strides in the world of design by encouraging research and collaboration.
