Overview

The Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Predoctoral Fellowship to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research is a grant that aims to increase the diversity in the biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research workforce. It encourages the professional development of predoctoral students from groups usually underrepresented in these fields.

The award supports the students’ mentored research training carried out under leading faculty sponsors. The participants will undertake focused research projects in scientific health-related fields. These projects should align with the objectives of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers.

The aim is to augment the students' potential to become independent, productive research scientists in the future. However, the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) does not permit candidates to manage an independent clinical trial or feasibility study. Students can, though, gain research experience in a clinical trial overseen by a sponsor or co-sponsor.
