Overview

The Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) offers a unique fellowship opportunity for students at institutions that don't host NIH-funded institutional predoctoral dual-degree training programs. Known as the Parent F30, this program is particularly aimed at students enrolled in dual-doctoral degree training programs such as MD/PhD, DO/PhD, DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and who aspire to become physician/clinician-scientists.

The main intention of the Kirschstein-NRSA F30 fellowship is to boost both the research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students. In order to qualify, the candidates must formulate a combined research and clinical training plan. Additionally, they must also propose a dissertation research project falling within the scientific health-related categories that the participating NIH Institutes and Centers deem relevant.

It's important to note that this fellowship opportunity is expected to significantly enhance the candidate's potential of progressing into an independent physician or clinician-scientist. However, it's exclusively designed for those who aren't proposing research involving personally leading an independent clinical trial, feasibility study, or an ancillary clinical trial. Nevertheless, the fellowship does allow candidates to propose gaining research experience through a clinical trial that's managed by a sponsor or co-sponsor.
