Overview

The NSF Convergence Accelerator is a grant program offered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that aims to address major societal challenges through research and innovation. The program utilizes a convergence approach, which combines interdisciplinary research and innovation processes like human-centered design and team science, to transition basic research into practical solutions for high-impact societal challenges.

The program consists of two phases: Phase 1 and Phase 2. Phase 1 provides resources for awardees to further develop their research ideas and establish important partnerships and resources to accelerate their projects. Phase 2 provides significant resources to awardees for the development of research prototypes and sustainability plans.

The grant opportunity for the 2023 cohort includes three tracks: Track K (Equitable Water Solutions), Track L (Real-World Chemical Sensing Applications), and Track M (Bio-Inspired Design Innovations). Each track focuses on specific research themes and aims to develop solutions to major societal and economic challenges.

Proposals for this grant opportunity should be led by non-academic entities, such as Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs), non-profits, independent museums, observatories, research labs, professional societies, and similar organizations. Proposals led by for-profit or similar organizations should respond to a separate Broad Agency Announcement (BAA).

To submit a Phase 1 Full Proposal, proposers are required to first submit a Letter of Intent. The Letter of Intent should include a description of the proposed project, the expected deliverables, and the interdisciplinary team that will be formed to carry out the research. If selected, Phase 1 awards may receive funding up to $750,000 for a duration of 12 months.

During Phase 1, awardees will participate in an intensive planning phase that includes a curriculum on innovation processes and access to coaches who can provide support. Phase 1 awardees also have the opportunity to participate in the NSF Convergence Accelerator Pitch Presentations.

Only awardees of Phase 1 are eligible to submit a Phase 2 proposal. Phase 2 proposals should outline a 24-month research and development plan that focuses on transitioning research into practice through convergence activities, multi-sector partnerships, and collaboration with end-users. Phase 2 awards may be up to $5 million for a duration of 24 months.

Phase 2 teams must include partnerships critical for success and involve end-users who will play a role in developing deliverables and facilitating the practical use of research outputs. Progress of Phase 2 teams will be assessed throughout the year, and funding for the second year will be provided based on the team's performance and achievement of milestones.

The program encourages proposals and partnerships with minority-serving institutions to promote broad participation and ensure that research benefits everyone.

Overall, the NSF Convergence Accelerator program provides funding and support to encourage interdisciplinary research and innovation that can address major societal challenges and lead to practical solutions with significant national impact.
