Overview

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched the Broadening Opportunities for Computational Genomics and Data Science Education program, also known as UE5. This program is aimed at promoting research education activities in the NIH's mission areas. A key aim of this initiative is to encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, particularly those from underrepresented groups in the biomedical and behavioral sciences to advance their studies or careers in computational genomics and data science research.

The primary focus of UE5 is to support innovative educational activities. One such activity is Courses for Skills Development. The program offers to assist faculty members at minority-serving institutions (MSIs) to design undergraduate or master's degree programs in computational genomics, data science, or both.

This effort to augment computational genomics and data science education will be supported by the Educational Hub for Enhancing Diversity in Computational Genomics and Data Science. This hub has been established through the RFA-HG-22-002 mechanism. The new courses that are created will employ the resources of NIH cloud computing platforms such as the National Human Genome Research Institute's (NHGRI's) AnVIL system and the All of Us Researcher Workbench. In essence, the goal of the UE5 program is to expand learning opportunities and skill development in computational genomics and data science, while prioritizing diversity in these scientific fields.
