Overview

The University Nuclear Leadership Program (UNLP) is announcing a funding opportunity. The purpose is to provide multiple cooperative agreements to accredited two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States (U.S.). These institutions will receive and distribute scholarship and fellowship funding to selected students who are studying at these institutions.

This scholarship and fellowship funding comes under the mandate of the Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE). The process for selecting the students who will receive this funding will be separate and will be undertaken by the DOE-NE.

The UNLP aims to attract students who are studying nuclear science and engineering (NS&E) into nuclear energy professions by offering undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships. These are open to students engaged in two-year, four-year, and graduate programs in disciplines related to nuclear energy. These disciplines include - but are not limited to - Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Health Physics, Nuclear Materials Science, Radiochemistry, Applied Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Policy, Radiation Protection Technology, Nuclear Power Technology, Nuclear Maintenance Technology, Nuclear Engineering Technology, Computer Science, and Cybersecurity.

Aside from scholarships for these disciplines, the program also provides support for the training of nuclear energy-related technicians in areas such as nuclear operations, mechanical and electrical maintenance, and radiation protection.

The DOE-NE aims to stimulate the exploration and development of advanced nuclear science and technology. They promote nuclear energy as a viable resource that can meet the country's energy, environmental, and national security needs by overcoming scientific, technical, and regulatory obstacles through research, development, and demonstration.

The UNLP also supports the Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP) of the DOE-NE. This program facilitates ground-breaking research at U.S. Institutions of Higher Education through various means, including: coordinating research and development at U.S. the colleges and universities, national laboratories and industry; attracting top students to the nuclear sectors; improving the infrastructure for research and development at U.S. institutions, and facilitating the transfer of knowledge to the next generation of workers.

By educating undergraduate and graduate students in NS&E, this program will address the ongoing need for skilled personnel in the field of nuclear power technology, improve the research and development capabilities at these institutions and meet the national demand for highly trained scientists and engineers in the NS&E sectors.
