Overview

The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program, run by the National Science Foundation (NSF), provides their most prestigious awards to young faculty. Awardees should show potential for becoming academic role models in both research and education, contributing to the progress of their respective fields. The program aims to encourage these faculty members to build a strong foundation for an enduring leadership role blending education and research. Early-career faculty from all organizations eligible to participate in CAREER are welcomed to send their proposals. There is a particular emphasis on applications from women, underrepresented minorities, and persons living with disabilities.

Additionally, each year, through CAREER, NSF nominates faculty for the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), which is an initiative of various federal agencies. The selection process for this award is based on three key criteria: innovative research in science, engineering, and technology relevant to the nominating organization or field; community service through scientific leadership, education or outreach; and commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion in STEM fields.

The PECASE awards play a significant role in promoting innovative science and technology developments, enhancing awareness of science and engineering careers, appreciating the scientific work of participating agencies, strengthening the link between fundamental research and national goals, and underlining the importance of science and technology for the future of the nation.

It should be noted, however, that individuals themselves cannot directly apply for PECASE. The selection process is initiated by the participating federal agencies, with NSF selecting up to twenty-six nominees from its recent PECASE-eligible CAREER awardees. The final selection and announcement of the awardees is made by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. These awardees are chosen based on their likelihood to become key figures in academic research and education in the 21st century.
