Overview

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) offers the Biobehavioral Research Awards for Innovative New Scientists (BRAINS) to excelling researchers in the early stages of their careers. This grant, which also allows for clinical trials, is specifically intended for researchers planning long-term careers dedicated to sectors specifically addressed by NIMH.

The NIMH BRAINS award, a reissue of the earlier RFA-MH-20-525 grant, is focused on supporting research and the career advancement of exceptionally productive emerging scientists. It assists new scientists in launching innovative research programs in clinical, translational, basic, or services research fields.

Through these programs, NIMH aims to drastically improve our understanding, diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of mental disorders. The BRAINS program tailors its efforts towards the research priorities and gap areas identified in the NIMH Strategic Plan. The ultimate goal is to foster and support vital research that has the potential to significantly impact the field of mental health.
