Overview
The "Social Disconnection and Suicide Risk in Late Life" grant (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) invites research applications that explore the link between social disconnection and suicide risk among older adults. Social disconnection encompasses both objective social isolation and subjective feelings of loneliness. This grant prioritizes research that aims at understanding the neurobiological and environmental forces associated with social isolation and loneliness and how they heighten the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors among older individuals. Further, the research should adopt an experimental therapeutics approach to pinpoint potential intervention targets to prevent late-life suicide. Lastly, the research must aim to innovate and amend existing service delivery models to improve social connections among older adults as a preventive measure against suicide.
