Overview

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) presents a grant program titled Building Research Capacity of New Faculty in Biology (BRC-BIO). The aim of this initiative is to boost the research capabilities and broaden the involvement of new biology faculty at minority-serving institutions (MSIs), predominantly undergraduate institutions (PUIs), and other colleges and universities that are not among the topmost research-intensive. This is all in an effort to diversify the participant pool of institutions submitting proposals to BIO.

Another significant objective of the BRC-BIO program is to widen opportunities for groups typically underrepresented in the biological sciences. This includes Blacks and African Americans, Hispanics, Latinos, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, and people with disabilities, particularly those serving at under-resourced institutions.

The grant program supports new faculty to initiate and develop independent research programs by enhancing their research capabilities. This might be conducted through biology-centric research collaborations within the same institution, across peer-, or research-intensive institutions, or even partnerships with industry or non-academic partners that aid in advancing the candidate's research.

The BRC-BIO program aims to address the national urgency of broadening, strengthening, and diversifying the workforce in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It would specifically aid institutions focused on teaching and undergraduate education or those with limited research capacity. The funded projects should assist in the creation of sustainable research programs for faculty while simultaneously enriching undergraduate research experiences, thereby cultivating the STEM workforce.

The grant program invites applications from principal investigators committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. All proposals responding to this solicitation should be submitted to the Division of Biological Infrastructure (DBI) in the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO).
