Overview

The "Social Disconnection and Suicide Risk in Late Life" grant (R21 Clinical Trial Optional) is a funding opportunity that aims to support research projects exploring the connection between social disconnection, such as objective isolation (actual lack of social interaction) and subjective or perceived social isolation (feelings of loneliness), and suicide risk in older individuals. The initiative particularly encourages research efforts focused on identifying the neurobiological and environmental factors influenced by isolation and loneliness that correlate with a higher risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors in late life.

Researchers are also encouraged to use experimental therapeutics in order to identify potential preventive measures and intervention strategies for late-life suicide. Additionally, the initiative hopes to stimulate research efforts that focus on developing new or enhancing existing service delivery models that can improve social connectivity amongst the elderly population as a way of preventing suicide.
