Overview

The Next Generation Multipurpose Prevention Technologies (NGM) grant, which accepts applications for R01 Clinical Trials, aims to promote the ongoing development of innovative prevention technologies that offer on-demand, event-driven and long-acting solutions. These technologies range from systemic to non-systemic multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) and can be applied to a range of health care issues.

The grant primarily focuses on supporting MPTs that work on the prevention of HIV infection and unwanted pregnancies. These prevention methods may involve either hormonal or non-hormonal techniques. It can also help in developing MPTs to reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and pregnancy.

Furthermore, the grant encourages the making of MPTs that defend against multiple non-HIV STIs or HIV/STIs in cisgender and transgender males, and females of all ages. The grant also encourages applications that are based on drug development. It supports pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, safety, and drug-drug interaction studies considering formulation science performed with animal model testing.

Additionally, it backs biobehavioral and behavioral/social studies to unearth prevention technology traits that users desire, including aspects such as appearance, texture, effectiveness, safety, and the duration of the protection it offers. These studies are aimed towards understanding behavioral and social aspects that could promote the increased adoption and usage of MPTs.
