Overview

The Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grant (T32) is a grant funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The aim of this grant is to offer financial support to eligible domestic institutions, enabling them to construct or improve both predoctoral and postdoctoral research training. This includes short-term research training and is with the aim of nurturing a highly skilled and diverse workforce that can address the needs of the country’s biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research landscape.

These research training programs are designed to be interactive and instructive, incorporating elements of research and professional development. The goal is to prepare trainees for careers that will greatly impact the nation's health-related research needs. However, programs that are solely offering short-term predoctoral research training shouldn't apply to this grant. Such programs are better suited for the Kirschstein-NRSA Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grant Program (T35), which is specifically meant to support short-term predoctoral research training.

Lastly, the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) of this grant states that appointed trainees are not permitted to lead an independent clinical trial. They are, however, allowed to gain research experience under the guidance of a mentor or co-mentor in a clinical trial.
