Overview

The Division of Materials Research (DMR) offers the Topical Materials Research Programs grant to support research in material science. This field merges physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering to study and understand the properties of_materials and the wide-ranging phenomena they contain.

Material research plays a significant role in various aspects of life, society, and understanding the world we live in. It brings about significant advances in areas as diverse as nanoelectronics and health industries. Furthermore, the development and implementation of advanced materials boost the economic growth of the U.S.

The DMR supports research aimed at broadening the fundamental comprehension of materials, alongside their discovery, design, synthesis, characterization, properties, and related phenomena. The grant fosters understanding of electronic, atomic, and molecular structures that regulate nanoscale to macroscale morphology and properties and helps in maneuvering and controlling these properties.

Also, it encourages the discovery of new phenomena of matter and materials, alongside the inception of innovative design, synthesis, and processing strategies that culminate in new materials with distinct characteristics. These breakthroughs exceed the boundaries of traditional scientific and engineering fields.

The DMR grants are not just vital for evolving future technologies and industries that cater to societal needs but also crucial for training the future generation of materials researchers.

In addition to basic research, the DMR uses the grant to fund various educational activities, individual investigators, teams, centers, facilities, and instrumentation in the United States.

However, eligibility rules apply to submissions. Please refer to Section II for the Program Description, Section IV for Eligibility Information, and Section V.A for Proposal Preparation Instructions.
