Overview

The National Science Foundation provides funding for the Geospace Facilities. These include four major incoherent-scatter radar facilities spread on a longitudinal chain that extends from Greenland to Peru. Each of these facilities also has high-powered optical diagnostic tools.

Another key component of the Geospace Facilities is the SuperDARN coherent scatter radar system. This system is made up of several coherent-scatter high-frequency radars placed across both the northern and southern hemispheres.

The primary objective of the Geospace Facilities is to push forward the basic science exploring the Earth's upper atmosphere structure and dynamics. The research conducted using these facilities is closely associated with the Aeronomy Program and Magnetospheric Physics Program.
