Overview

The National Institutes of Health is offering a grant under the program named "Neuroscience Development for Advancing the Careers of a Diverse Research Workforce (R25). The program aims to hone neurologists from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds at various career stages. Any organization interested in applying should propose innovative ways to mentor and further professional development under the umbrella of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke(NINDS) or the National Institute of Mental Health(NIMH).

The main objective of this R25 initiative is to focus on factors that can enhance the retention rate of underrepresented individuals. These groups include graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and junior faculty in neuroscience research. To accomplish this, the initiative aims to enhance the role of mentoring, creating broad scientific networks, promoting professional development, and fostering an inclusive structural and institutional environment.

The NIH expects the applicant institutions to design their programs to enhance the professional and technical skills of individuals from diverse backgrounds, specifically those who are nationally underrepresented in the neuroscience field. They encourage programs that focus on multiple or transitional career stages to facilitate career advancement in neuroscience.

The initiative will support the creation of collaborative research education partnerships that will increase interest and foster knowledge in neurosciences. They should also develop the scientific knowledge and research skills of the participants, enabling them to advance in neuroscience-related research education and training activities. This grant also emphasizes the need for proposed programs to foster leadership opportunities, use asset models, and enhance workforce diversity.
