Overview

The BRAIN Initiative: Targeted BRAIN Circuits Projects- TargetedBCP (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) (reissues RFA-NS-18-030) is a call for applications for research projects. These projects should use innovative ways to understand how brain circuit activity leads to behaviors and mental experiences. The objective is to support research that can achieve significant outcomes within a five-year period.

Applicants should focus their studies on the function of brain circuits within specific neural systems. These systems may involve sensation, perception, attention, reasoning, intention, decision-making, emotion, navigation, communication, or homeostasis. It is essential for these projects to combine theory with data analysis in experimental design and to develop predictive modeling.

The projects should aim to enhance the understanding of the central nervous system's circuits. They would do this by systematically controlling stimuli or behavior while simultaneously recording or manipulating the dynamic patterns of neural activity.

The use of both non-human and human species in these projects is permitted. However, applicants must provide a detailed explanation demonstrating why their chosen species is ideal for uncovering the fundamental principles of the circuit basis for a given behavior.
