Overview

The Collaborative Program Grant for Multidisciplinary Teams (RM1 – Clinical Trial Optional) is a funding opportunity designed to support research teams of three to six Project Directors or Principal Investigators (PD/PIs). Its main aim is to encourage innovative research tackling ambitious and complex issues, necessary to the mission of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). Unlike other programs, this grant particularly emphasizes on team collaborations that bring significant synergy and managed team interactions to address research problems. It does not favor projects that can be achieved by individual efforts.

The teams are urged to set broad goals capable of creating significant impacts on their respective fields. However, it is important to note that applications focused primarily on creation, expansion, or maintenance of community resources, the establishment of new technologies, or infrastructural development will not be suitable for this grant.

Also noteworthy is its allowance for the inclusion of clinical trials defined by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Nevertheless, the NIGMS will not accept clinical trials directed at testing safety and effectiveness of interventions at any phase (I, II, III) which would be used for future clinical treatment or regulation approval. This grant encourages applications that go beyond the scope of what one or two investigators can achieve, taking on ambitious and challenging research questions to produce significant progress in the field.
