Overview

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) has an opportunity for physicians and scientists titled "Physician-Scientist Pathway to Independence Award" (K99/R00). This awards program is intended to help increase and sustain a high-caliber pool of new, independent physician-scientists. It plays a crucial role in helping exceptional postdoctoral researchers, who are also clinicians, progress from mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equal faculty positions.

During this transition, the program furnishes independent research support to help awardees commence competitive, independent careers in biomedical research. This assists in addressing the national shortage of physician-scientists. The Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is specifically tailored for applicants proposing to act as the principal investigator of an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or a separate ancillary clinical trial as a part of their career and research development.

However, those who do not intend to conduct an independent clinical trial, or wish to acquire research experience in a clinical trial led by a different investigator, will need to apply through a companion Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA #).
